Our Challenge

As Stewart Brand said in the introduction to the Whole Earth Catalogs,

"If we are going to act like gods, we might as well get good at it."

And Biomimicry is one key, and in a sense, one of the legacy's of the Whole Earth movement. Like Buckminster Fuller's comprehensive antipatory design science, Biomimicry is (1) the exploration and understanding of nature, i.e., the environment, as the technology and economy of an exquisitely evolved and designed regenerative life support system (living machine) that has been tested and developed over 3.8 billion years of evolution (see-the time line of evolution) and then (2) applying those battle-hardened principles to all aspects of human activity--designing, creating, and managing of society, from industrial products, to urban and regional systems, to public policy, business, the economy, etc., i.e., Sustainability 2030 and the leading edge of the sustainability response.

Key Questions

Sustainability 2030's (S2030) research/practice program addresses the following key questions:

1. How can you/we become effective, powerful, even transformational forces for sustainability?

2. What is the program required for ultimate sustainability success--the end game?

3. Who has part of the answer now (current sustainability champions), how far do they take us, and how can we harness the state-of-the-art leading edge sustainability to an innovative research/practice program that gets us to ultimate success in the limited time remaining?  (more)

Mission

Advance, accelerate, and amplify an accurate understanding of the sustainability challenge and how to harness the power and potential of sustainability for an effective response before time runs out. The Strategic Sustainability2030 Institute  (S2030I) is a web-based think/do tank (more).

Our Challenge

as Buckminster Fuller observed, is

"to make the world work for 100% of humanity, in the shortest possible time, through spontaneous cooperation without ecological offense or the disadvantage of anyone."

This goal is the essence of sustainable development! The Buckminster Fuller Institute (BFI) provides access to Bucky's legacy, including his comprehensive anticipatory design science revolution. Check out their website, their programs, and engage.

Problem & Way Out

Caption: "Sadly, the only proven way to achieve global GHG reductions so far has been economic recession." Comment: Fortunately, shifting to 100% renewables would catalyze the global transition to durable prosperity and community well-being in a way that would eliminate GHG production AND grow the economy <<continued>>. Changing Balance of Urban Economic Power

Read the McKinsey overview and four supporting papers from their research program on changing face of the global urban economy.

Asia’s growing economic power manifests itself in many ways. Back in 2007, for example, only 8 of the top 50 urban areas (by GDP) were located there. Half of global GDP came from the developed world’s top 380 cities, with 20-plus percent from just 190 North American ones. But over the next 15 years, the urban center of gravity will move south and—still more decisively—east. By 2025, Asia will boast upward of 20 of the top 50 cities, and Shanghai and Beijing will have GDPs higher than those of Los Angeles and London.

Climate Change Denying will be Fatal AND is Fatally Flawed

Public discourse seems to increasingly suffer from a confusion between  fact and opinion, argument and belief, the rational and irrational. Accordingly, society now possesses a declining capacity to make these critical distinctions and comprehend their import for public policy, decision making, and governance. As a result, society is losing or is about to lose its guiding rudder at a time when it is most needed. This capacity is needed to respond

Winning or Losing the Future, Now--Our Choice!

Do we want to be the generation that lost the future for humanity or won it?

That is the sustainability challenge we face. It is our choice; one we can and need to make in the affirmative.

This is the thesis underlying the work of Lester Brown, his Earth Policy Institute, and his most recent book, World on the Edge: How to Prevent Environmental and Economic Collapse (see links below), as he describes it in a letter to readers (see link). His key points are as follows:

Organic & Sustainable Agriculture - Strong Job Prospects

Sustainability: The Journal of Record is working on an article focused on the growing trend of colleges and universities offering courses, certificates or degree programs in organic and sustainable agriculture.

According to a recent Associated Press report, experts said those graduates shouldn't have trouble finding jobs as the agriculture industry replaces aging farmers—the average age of a U.S. farmer is 57—and farmers increasingly look to diversify their operations.

Comprehensive Ecological Design for a Carbon Neutral World

The Regional Case-Model for Appalachia

. . . the Buckminster Fuller Challenge winner, 2008. This is a short description of a sophisticated ecological design proposal for restoration of the devastated ecological-economic-social remains of the extractive coal industry and creation of a new, biologically-based ecologically-economic regenerative regional economy and society.

This is one promising approach to--and example of--the restorative/regenerative, integrative, socio-economic-ecological dimension of sustainability planning.

See also, The Buckminster Fuller Challenge for other winner and runner-up ideas, the resources page for access to the intellectual foundation for comprehensive anticipatory design science, and the Idea Index 1.0 (v 2.0 soon),

As a networking tool, the Index allows site visitors to contact the project leaders, leave a constructive and/or encouraging comment and connect with one another. It presents a fully searchable database of socially-responsible initiatives, in all stages of development, in need of further funding and support.
