Our Challenge

As Stewart Brand said in the introduction to the Whole Earth Catalogs,

"If we are going to act like gods, we might as well get good at it."

And Biomimicry is one key, and in a sense, one of the legacy's of the Whole Earth movement. Like Buckminster Fuller's comprehensive antipatory design science, Biomimicry is (1) the exploration and understanding of nature, i.e., the environment, as the technology and economy of an exquisitely evolved and designed regenerative life support system (living machine) that has been tested and developed over 3.8 billion years of evolution (see-the time line of evolution) and then (2) applying those battle-hardened principles to all aspects of human activity--designing, creating, and managing of society, from industrial products, to urban and regional systems, to public policy, business, the economy, etc., i.e., Sustainability 2030 and the leading edge of the sustainability response.

Key Questions

Sustainability 2030's (S2030) research/practice program addresses the following key questions:

1. How can you/we become effective, powerful, even transformational forces for sustainability?

2. What is the program required for ultimate sustainability success--the end game?

3. Who has part of the answer now (current sustainability champions), how far do they take us, and how can we harness the state-of-the-art leading edge sustainability to an innovative research/practice program that gets us to ultimate success in the limited time remaining?  (more)

Mission

Advance, accelerate, and amplify an accurate understanding of the sustainability challenge and how to harness the power and potential of sustainability for an effective response before time runs out. The Strategic Sustainability2030 Institute  (S2030I) is a web-based think/do tank (more).

Our Challenge

as Buckminster Fuller observed, is

"to make the world work for 100% of humanity, in the shortest possible time, through spontaneous cooperation without ecological offense or the disadvantage of anyone."

This goal is the essence of sustainable development! The Buckminster Fuller Institute (BFI) provides access to Bucky's legacy, including his comprehensive anticipatory design science revolution. Check out their website, their programs, and engage.

Problem & Way Out

Caption: "Sadly, the only proven way to achieve global GHG reductions so far has been economic recession." Comment: Fortunately, shifting to 100% renewables would catalyze the global transition to durable prosperity and community well-being in a way that would eliminate GHG production AND grow the economy <<continued>>. Real Time Carbon Counter

http://www.dbcca.com/dbcca/EN/index.jsp

The DB Climate Advisors' Carbon Counter displays the running total amount of long-lived greenhouse gasses in the earth's atmosphere, measured in metric tons.

We are seeking to raise public awareness of climate change. As investors, we know the importance of measurement so that we can track progress. Our approach is to start by understanding the quantity, or concentrations, of long-lived greenhouse gases which are building up in the world's atmosphere and are leading to global warming.

The full implications for global warming coming from greenhouse gases are outlined both in the IPCC Synthesis Report (below) and a more recent paper from MIT (also below) looking at the probabilities of warming. To quote MIT's News Office this is "the most comprehensive modeling yet carried out on the likelihood of how much hotter the Earth's climate will get in this century shows that without rapid and massive action, the problem will be about twice as severe as previously estimated six years ago - and could be even worse than that." By 2100, surface temperatures could be 5.1 degrees Celsius higher.

Eight Myths about the Waxman-Markey Clean Energy Bill

No bill is perfect. Certainly not one that contains a thousand pages and
seeks to overhaul the way our nation uses energy. But many of the recent
attacks on the American Clean Energy and Security Act (ACES) proposed by
Representatives Waxman and Markey go beyond fact-based policy disagreements
and venture more into the realm of mythology.

The American Clean Energy Security Act:

An Honest Look at Potential Consumer Costs

Two recent government analyses that looked at the costs of the cap and trade
portion of the American Clean Energy and Security Act of 2009 (ACES) have
found that the likely impact of this portion of the bill would be fairly
small.

Development Studies

 Resources from Wikipedia

Development Studies: from Category Page, Wikipedia:

Development studies is a multi-disciplinary social science which studies the principles and processes governing structural and qualitative changes in the way society functions which increase its capacity to accomplish its objectives. In the broadest terms applicable to all societies and historical periods, development studies is concerned with the upward directional movement of society characterized by greater levels of energy, efficiency, quality, productivity, complexity, comprehension, creativity, mastery, enjoyment and accomplishment.

Each field of social science views the overall development of society in relation to changes within its respective field. Development science seeks to identify the underlying laws, processes and stages common to all fields and expressions of developmental change.

Systems Science Portal

Wikipedia Systems Science Portal.  From the Wikipedia introduction:

Systems are sets of entities, physical or abstract, comprising a whole where each component interacts with or is related to at least one other component and they all serve a common objective. The scientific research field which is engaged in the interdisciplinary study of universal system-based properties of the world is general system theory, systems science and recently systemics. They investigate the abstract properties of the matter and mind, their organization, searching concepts and principles which are independent of the specific domain, independent of their substance, type, or spatial or temporal scales of existence.

Systems science can be viewed as ... "a metalanguage of concepts and models for interdisciplinary use, still now evolving and far from being stabilized. This is the result of a slow process of accretion through inclusion and interconnection of many notions, which came and are still coming from very different disciplines. The process started more than a century ago, but has gathered momentum since 1948 through the pioneering work of Norbert Wiener, John von Neumann, Ludwig von Bertalanffy, Heinz von Foerster and W. Ross Ashby, among many others" (Charles François, 1999).

Limits to Growth / Systems Thinking Primer

Limits to Growth - 30-Year Update (Meadows, et al)  See also, Thinking in Systems - A Primer, Donella Meadows (late).

The Club of Rome initially reported their path-breaking world modelling work in the short treatise, The Limits to Growth, 1972. It was received as an "I suspected as much" by environmentally intelligent scientists, citizens, and environmentalists, and branded and dismissed as doom saying by business and mainstream society. In 1972, the model predicted reaching the earth's carrying capacity limits given the current efficiencies, tools, and processes of the economy a couple to a few hundred years out.  The re-run of the model in the early 1990s reported in the book Beyond the Limits by Donnella Meadows et. al., confirmed many of the initial predictions, but shortened the time frame to 50-100 years.  The recent work of the IPCC and the accelerating dynamics of climate change shorten the timeframe even further, to 10-20 years before we hurl past the point of no return for system destabilization and likely collapse. The upside of this exercise is that the models also illuminate the path to reverse course and to chart a new course towards systems management for sustainability, which also promises a higher magnitude of wealth production and economic security than our current unsustainable socioeconomic trajectory. Will we be smart enough and capable enough to read the writing on the wall and reverse course is the million dollar question of the first third of the 21st century. After that, all bets will either be on or off.

STELLA - Systems Thinking Software

Tools for systems thinking -- like STELLA -- keep evolving from the mainframe to the desktop, probably to the mobile phone soon enough! Here's the introductory marketing material and testimonials on Stella.

"Systems Thinking software like STELLA and iThink is an increasingly valuable tool for constructing understanding about all kinds of dynamic systems from natural environments to team dynamics to economic markets."

Peter Senge, Author of The Fifth Discipline, Founding Chairperson, SoL

Education and research are most exciting when they move out of the lecture hall and library and provide opportunity to create, experience, and see. STELLA® offers a practical way to dynamically visualize and communicate how complex systems and ideas really work.

Whether they are first-time or experienced modelers, teachers, students, and researchers use STELLA to explore and answer endless questions like:

  • How does climate change influence an ecosystem over time?
  • Would Hamlet’s fate have changed if he’d killed Claudius earlier?
  • How do oil prices respond to shocks in supply and/or demand?
  • What will happen when the ozone layer is gone?
  • How do basic macroeconomic principles affect income and consumption?
"STELLA gives us an enormously powerful and flexible tool for creating environments that allow people to learn by doing."

Political Economy Research Institute

University of Massachusetts Amherst - PERI

The Political Economy Research Institute (PERI) promotes human and ecological well-being through our original research. Our approach is to translate what we learn into workable policy proposals that are capable of improving life on our planet today and in the future. In the words of the late Professor Robert Heilbroner, we at PERI “strive to make a workable science out of morality.”

Established in 1998, PERI is an independent unit of the University of Massachusetts, Amherst, with close ties to the Department of Economics. PERI staff frequently work collaboratively with faculty members and graduate students from the University of Massachusetts, and other economists from around the world. Many of these colleagues have become PERI Research Associates. Since its founding, PERI has become a leading source of research and policy initiatives on issues of globalization, unemployment, financial market instability, central bank policy, living wages and decent work, and the economics of peace, development, and the environment.

PERI’s goals for the future are to:

  • continue producing high-quality research;
  • increasingly focus the public economics debate on human and ecological welfare;
  • expand the number of economists collaborating on PERI projects;
  • and continue to raise our profile in the full range of communities that are concerned with economic policy questions.

Leadership for the Needed Sustainability Transformation

The Authentic Leadership in Action (ALIA) Institute supports thought leadership for sustainability through a variety of programs.

Something is on the move. In our organizations, our communities, in our minds and hearts, we know that it is time to find a different way. The future is calling for it. And we see glimpses of it all around us — even in the midst of turmoil, retrenchment, and uncertainty. Collectively we are at a crossroads, and much is at stake. As leaders, how do we rise to this challenge? What simple but powerful approaches and practices will not only sustain us, but move our leadership to the next level? How do we release the capacity for innovation and resilience within and across our organizations and communities? Welcome to ALIA Europe, a six-day immersion in the fresh ideas, paradigm-shifting tools, and strategic conversations you need to guide your team, organization, or community through complex change. Spend 15 hours in a skill-building track facilitated by such thought-and-action leaders as Margaret Wheatley, David Rooke, and Lasse Wrennmark.

The ALIA Institute began as the week-long Shambhala Summer Institute, which has convened annually in Halifax, Nova Scotia, since 2001. Early thinking partners and faculty included Peter Senge, author of The Fifth Discipline and The Next Revolution; Margaret Wheatley, author of Leadership and the New Science; Juanita Brown, co-founder of The World Café movement; and Art Kleiner, editor-in-chief of strategy + business magazine.

This article has been reviewed and approved by the following Topic Editor: Chikkavanu Nanjundaiah (other articles) Last Updated: October 9, 2007 World economic production has more than quadrupled since the early 1960s. Further economic growth is clearly desirable in developing nations in order to improve the well-being of over a billion people who are now living in desperate poverty. Continued economic growth has been a principal policy objective in developed countries. But as we enter the 21st century, we must consider whether it is possible, or even desirable, to continue along the economic growth trajectory of the 20th century. Economic growth has been accompanied by an increasing demand for natural resources, as well as increases in waste, pollution, and ecosystem damages. Many ecologists warn us that the current scale of human impacts on the natural world is already unsustainable. The ecological implications of a further doubling, quadrupling, or more, of human economic activity is an issue which, to date, has received little attention from macroeconomists. In this section we consider the implications of current environmental issues for economic growth and development. First, we present an overview of some of the most pressing global environmental problems. Then we explore the relationship between economic growth and environmental quality, and discuss policies to promote ecologically sustainable development. . . .

From Failed Growth to Sustainable Steady State?

From a Failed Growth Economy to a Steady-State Economy
Lead Author: Herman Daly (other articles)
Article Topic: Ecological economics
This article has been reviewed and approved by the following Topic Editor: Robert Costanza (other articles)
Last Updated: June 5, 2009

Speaker: Herman E. Daly
Date: June 1, 2009
Event: United States Society for Ecological Economics bi-annual meeting
Location: American University, Washington D.C.
Video: Coming Soon

EDITOR'S NOTE: Herman E. Daly (1938-) is an American economist recognized as one of the founders of the field of ecological economics and as an eloquent critic of standard economic growth theory. He has worked for decades in proposing a steady state economy, and has argued that polices were needed to guide society towards a constant population, a constant material standard of living, and a equitable distribution of wealth. The U.S. Society for Ecological Economics awarded Dr. Daly a life time achievement award during their bi-annual conference in Washington DC in 2009. Part of the award was the compilation of a Festschrift.

A steady-state economy is incompatible with continuous growth—either positive or negative growth. The goal of a steady state is to sustain a constant, sufficient stock of real wealth and people for a long time. A downward spiral of negative growth, a depression such as we are entering now, is a failed growth economy, not a steady-state economy. Halting an accelerating downward spiral is necessary, but is not the same thing as resuming continuous positive growth. . . .

Frontiers in Ecological Economics

Frontiers in Ecological Economic Theory and Application
, 2007

Edited by Jon D. Erickson, Associate Professor of Ecological Economics,
Rubenstein School of Environment and Natural Resources, University of Vermont
and John M. Gowdy, Rittenhouse Professor of Humanities and Social Science,
Department of Economics, Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute, US

Research on the cutting edge of economics, ecology, and ethics is presented in this timely study. Building from a theoretical critique of the tradition of cost–benefit analysis, the contributors lay
the foundation for a macroeconomics of environmental sustainability and distributive justice. Attention is then turned to three of the most critical areas of social and environmental applied research – biodiversity, climate change, and energy.

The contributors redefine progress away from growth and toward development. To this end, the first section of the book tackles the dominant framework used in the US today to evaluate tradeoffs between economic growth and its inherent externalities. Google Earth--Day

Google celebrated Earth Day with some awesome new content on Google Earth. Read the excerpt below from The Sightseer May 2009 Issue. Nothing short of an amzaing contribution. Google Earth and the google earth team are at the forefront of making the dynamic, pulsating, multi-scalar one-earth environmental (primary economic) system a tangible experience. For instance:

Earth Day

Earth Day It probably comes as no surprise that the Google Earth team gets very excited about Earth Day. This year we celebrated Earth Day by featuring a special collection of KMLs in our Gallery to inspire awareness and appreciation for the Earth's environment -- it's a present to the Earth and also to you!

Our blue planet is an exceptionally complex ecosystem with a sophisticated tapestry of millions of sub-ecosystems and living creatures. Sometimes it becomes easy to overlook the impact of our action to this intricate yet fragile ecosystem. Why not mark Earth Day by using Google Earth to explore featured KMLs in our Gallery, which provide rich geospatial presentation illustrating interesting changes in our environment? For example, discover changes in glaciers over the years , rising sea levels and climatic change and rising temperature from the featured KMLs in our Gallery.

With annotated data on top of Google Earth, these KMLs provides insight into the way humans are interacting with ecosystems around the world. Do you know that how much overfishing has occurred in the past? How does the equivalent of 1.5 million elephants of fisheries catches in the water of Alaska sound to you? You can learn more from this KML . Our collection also features information about the worst oil spill disaster in the history and air pollution in the UK -- some good food for thought as you reflect on Earth Day.
