Water is crucial for sustainable development, including the preservation of our natural environment and the alleviation of poverty and hunger. World Water Day - Saturday, March 22 - is a global day of observance and action to draw attention to the plight of the more than 1 billion people world-wide that lack access to clean, safe drinking water. Celebrated since 1993, World Water Day was designated in 1992 by the United Nations General Assembly, and with each passing year the observance grows larger and stronger with events and activities around the world.
