Leveraging Leading Edge Sustainability Planning

The Sustainability Committee launched its research program in February 2011 in collaboration with three graduating seniors in San Francisco State University’s (SFSU) Department of Urban Studies and Planning (DUSP) program.
The Sustainability Committee’s mission is to accelerate effective sustainability planning in the Northern Section in response to the increasing urgency of the challenge.
The project’s objective was to explore leading edge sustainability planning cases and assemble an initial set of useful resources for Section members.
Scott T. Edmondson, AICP, Co-Chair of the Sustainability Committee was the client point-person and directed the project. The SFSU Student Team consisted of Maria Lee, Micahel Liles, and Jennifer Miller (see photo), with Dr. Jasper Rubin leading the class component of the project.
The Northern section consists of 16 counties: Del Norte, Humboldt, Mendocino, Lake, Sonoma, Napa, Marin, Solano, Contra Costa, San Francisco, San Mateo, Alameda, Santa Cruz, Santa Clara, San Benito, and Monterey. The Team researched sustainability plans for all these counties and their major cities to provide an exhaustive inventory. The team chose eight innovative plans to highlight for their creativity and effectiveness. By profiling these innovative plans, the Team hopes to provide a resource planners can use, thereby accelerating innovation and effectiveness.
